Abstract

This article analyzes how Muhammadiyah’s prophetic orientation is translated into social change within Indonesian local communities. It employs qualitative sociological document analysis of organizational texts, historical studies, community case research, and relevant scholarship published no later than 2022. Kuntowijoyo’s triad of humanization, liberation, and transcendence is combined with institutionalization, resource mobilization, embeddedness, and community agency as analytical dimensions. The findings show that prophetic values become socially consequential when converted into durable schools, clinics, philanthropic bodies, cadre networks, disaster-response units, and participatory empowerment programs. These institutions alter access to knowledge, health care, welfare, leadership, and collective organization. However, service expansion does not automatically constitute liberation. Programs remain transformative only when beneficiaries gain voice, organizational capacity, bargaining power, and control over resources. Local outcomes vary according to institutional density, leadership quality, class, gender, geography, and collaboration with state and market actors. The study concludes that Muhammadiyah’s prophetic movement is best understood as institutionalized moral action whose credibility depends on measurable empowerment, reflexive accountability, and sustained participation beyond charitable delivery.
